Bruno Mars Exhibits His Variety In Singing And Continuing To Make Hits

October 24th, 2010 · No Comments · music

Bruno Mars must have got tired of sharing the spotlight though, and just decided to drop his own number-1 hit over the summer with “Just the Way You Are.” Which of course is the song that made every teenage girl in the country hate their boyfriends for not being able to write them a song like that? Doo-Wops & Hooligans is an extremely lean album, containing only ten tracks and clocking in at just over 35 minutes. He makes every one of those minutes count though.

The album opens with “Grenade,” which might be one of the best unrequited love songs in recent memory. And no, all you Jersey Shore watchers, the song isn’t a reference to what you’re thinking. Bruno Mars displays his impressive vocal range over the catchy hook in which he sings “I’d catch a grenade for you / Throw my hand on a blade for you / I’d jump in front of train for you I would die for your baby, but you won’t do the same.” Maybe the most impressive thing about Doo-Wops is the way Bruno Mars so comfortably jumps around from genre to genre. On “Our First Time,” Bruno Mars whips out the falsetto vocals and lets The-Dream know that his title as King of Baby-Making Music may be in trouble. And on “Count on Me” he channels his inner-Jason Mraz in an ode to friendship.

It’s not all fantastic though. Whilst able of composing lyrics that make teenage ladies all around the nation melt, he indicates he’s able of creating some stinkers too. “The Lazy Song” lives up to its namesake with some cringe worthy lyrics. “Tomorrow I’ll wake up, do some P90X / Meet a truly good girl, have some actually nice intercourse / and she’s likely to scream out ‘this is excellent.’ Yeah.” Even though it doesn’t often operate, the brilliance of Bruno Mars obviously lies in his simplistic and relatable lyrics, which is something he is entirely conscious of. “I’m a massive fan of basic tunes,” stated Mars in a recent interview with 4Music. “When we wrote ‘Just the Way You Are,’ I wasn’t thinking of anything at all deep or poetic. I was telling a story.”

Bruno Mars rarely enlists help on Doo-Wops, but when he does it works. Damian Marley appears on the fantastic “Liquor Store Blues.” And the song is about exactly what you think it would be about. “One shot for my pain, one drag for my sorrow / I’ll get messed up today, I’ll be ok tomorrow.” On “The Other Side,” Bruno Mars calls upon Bob and Cee Lo Green to help him close the album out. Both were probably eager to repay the favor after Mars helped them each score hits earlier in the year. In addition he sing the hook on Bob’s “Nothing’ on you,” and the r-rated Cee Lo song that became an internet favorite.

Bruno Mars possesses an undeniable charm that helps make up for some of the albums’ faults. With three top-10 hits already under his belt, that fact is pretty apparent, and he only continues the hit-making on Doo-Wops & Hooligans. Bruno Mars should get comfortable on the Billboard charts, because he’s going to be staying there for a while.
